(I just don't accept that the amount of people linked to your blog equals the authority of your message.)

In Finland we have cottages with public right of access. They are in wilderness and I have never used one. When you go there, everything is ready. You have firewood. You are tiered after a long walk. System works so that everyone makes the firewood for the next quest, because you should and because it makes sense. (It’s much nice to be able to start cooking straight away than try to find wet threes and make a fire.)

If this works in the wilderness – and people don’t know the next visitor – why should it work in virtual space? So let’s try a campaign “Donate a link”. Idea is that when you do to a site – like xo4u.blogspot.com and browse through links, you might also donate one of your good links to public use. Donating links means sharing them and you don’t have to know the next guest.

(I know that this is much the same as Y! MyWeb 2.0. If you like it, use it. Or Del.isio.us or Blinklist) I have tried to find out how Technorati counts links. I cannot figure it out. Also I have been playing with Blinklist.

I have made a small demonstration about one way to share links.
1) Users tag their links at Blinklist and
2) I have RSS feeds on my blog at "Video collection". It generates links that are tagged as "Exercise", "Martial arts", and "Health". In future it will be refined with a bolean operation of RSSfeeds.
3) Users are not publishing to this site, I am just sharing public links. And anyone can log in to a RSSFeed or use this site as it is.

socialcomputing ContinuousComputing socialnetworking socialsoftware

Attention as power

Just downloaded Yahoos My Web2 and also tried to understand how links are make in technorati. Or maybe we should just think of text, photo and video and use a media at it’s best. Use video to show, when we have to footish and write when we need to deal with abstract concepts.

In citizen journalism we need to use more video – it can be from our mobile phone or digital camera, but video camcorders are quite small to carry, too. The importance of it has been recognized very broadly. (In EU projects are poorly funded compared to many other issues.)

I did a media exchange project with BBC learning centre http://www.bbc.co.uk/21cc/
We let 15 to 16 years old students do television inserts in Jyvaskyla and London and exchanges stories. Reportages were broadcasted on BBC2.

BBC is very active in citizen journalism. We have worked with an organization called CSV (www.csv.org.uk) to launch an international project for training citizen journalists. CSV works much with BBC’s regional radio stations. (Email me, some one wants more information about this.)

Biggest sharing that BBC has is the Creative Archive. http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/05_may/26/creative_archive.shtml

This is old news for many of you. But I’ll try to give a new angle on this. I have been following this and talked with Paul Gerhardt. He is the joint director. So there is something more than speculation in my comment.

BBC has about 25000 employees, but it will give free access to huge amount of it’s intellectual property (aca ”content”). BBC is a public broadcaster, but it is not a charity organization. It is responsible for it’s workers. The decision to share up to 20% of it’s content is a sound business decision. BBC will make a profit. Material that is shared is low resolution and cannot be used in television broadcasting or corporate presentations. It just creates a “hype”. (I think this is a great win-win idea.)

I commented on the story about freelancers getting fired because news papers are using bloggers. In BBC journalists will be able to keep their jobs, because BBC uses the help of citizen journalism.

(We live in a strange world. Even business is changing. We used to have just products and services, but know we have something called intellectual property – like copyrights, contacts, status or fame. We buy and sell possibilities – options to success. So is the question, does citizen journalist get paid? Does the money come from add on blogs or from freelance salary from different sources.

2) Also Sam Whitmore is concerned about literacy, but more of reading and writing. Often we speak of digital literacy and this would include the skills and wills of using blogs and RSS and mobilephone and satelite television. Sam has a "audio feed" a kind of audioblog or his own radiochannel. That is one solution for helping people who don't want to read.

But is there business (money) in this? This is a relevant question only if you need money. Some one can be doing this just to pass the time or to help others of the get recognized:-)

The power of citizen journalism might not be in one individual blogger. It might not be a way to get rich for most of us. It does not have to compite with business of atension (newspapers, broadcasters and so on.)

Power of citizen journalism might be in the idea of global village. In the idea of 150 persons in a tribe and about 1000 contacts as a personal network. Citizen journalism makes you rich in your contacts. It can be a hobby or a profession. In a hobby it is enough to be read or to be heard. As a profession we need to get fame or money. (Fame or recognition is “money in many areas.)

So for everyone is important to understand why they are writing. (I am doing a PhD on this.) Also it would be good if your audience knows where you come from. In citizen-journalism a very big issue seems to be creditability. Does the reporter have a hidden agenda? (As if that would not be the case in traditional journalism?)

The point I am trying to get is, that one way of thinking of civic, citizen or public journalism is think of it as “Hide Park”. Your box is digital media. In Hide Park the speakers can see their audiences. We need to see ours in citizen journalism. The story might be from the backyard, but who is interested in listening to us?

Check http://www.ireporter.org

Tools for mobile communication

Yep, I will start looking for tools and software to be connected to internet all the time. Virtual in a meaning that we are connected to blogs, forums and play games in get with people that we have never met in person.

BUT people in virtual world are real living people. The character might be an animated figure, but there is a real person controlling it. Is this a real social contact? or imagination? Is virtual world something real. I think it can become more real as friends from internet start meeting each other in real life. Would we call a penpal an imaginary friend even though we have not met him?

What if some one is using a fake identity? Does it make him virtual? He has a laser view or a can hear discussions from other cities and so on. What if anyone of us, could become a super-hero? Not alone, but with help of others? There is a experience on http://www.continuousblog.net/2005/05/post.html about "Social Computing". Idea is that we all collect and process information and that way build a collective super threnght.

In near future (or now in some cases) collecting information and tagging it to OWL http://www.w3.org/TR/2004/REC-owl-features-20040210/ can be automated. So where ever you are, you are connected and reporting and also connected to use information others have collected. "A super nerd".

What do you want to do with your powers? I think that TV screen is too big and the picture is not very good. I don't think that people will start watching their current televisions this close. I don't think that they will carry them arround either - even if tv's were wireless.

So why do we compere TV and Mobile? Why does it sound clever when some one says that screen on a mobile phone is too small and we don't want to watch moving images on it? New phones have the same amount of pixels. It has the same amount of information. We just look at it closer and often in a noisier environment.
