Communication is a tool

Communication is basically a tool for us. We use it to fullfill our needs like getting noticed, and getting information and passing it to others.

In this sense mediated communication is just a technologically powered tool. We can do more good or bad with a powerful tool. Of cource my research is about how to use this tool more effectively, but I can stop wondering about the reasons for using this tool.

Why do we communicate? Are we getting wiser or greadier? Do I want to change the world or my self?

Virtual world is real

Often we speak of real world and virtual world. Virtual in a meaning that we are connected to blogs, forums and play games in get with people that we have never met in person.

BUT people in virtual world are real living people. The character might be an animated figure, but there is a real person controlling it. Is this a real social contact? or imagination? Is virtual world something real. I think it can become more real as friends from internet start meeting each other in real life. Would we call a penpal an imaginary friend even though we have not met him?

What if some one is using a fake identity? Does it make him virtual? No it makes him not trustworthy or shy? But there is a real person behind that identity.

It is a real world!

To go where the party is?

I blog to get feedback, but no one has replied on any post. That is here on my blog, but when I write to other sites, I get comments. Should I write to public sites or blog my own?

I think I will do the both for a while.

How to be a super-hero?

Super-hero has unnatural skills. He has a laser view or a can hear discussions from other cities and so on. What if anyone of us, could become a super-hero? Not alone, but with help of others? There is a experience on http://www.continuousblog.net/2005/05/post.html about "Social Computing". Idea is that we all collect and process information and that way build a collective super threnght.

In near future (or now in some cases) collecting information and tagging it to OWL http://www.w3.org/TR/2004/REC-owl-features-20040210/ can be automated. So where ever you are, you are connected and reporting and also connected to use information others have collected. "A super nerd".

What do you want to do with your powers? Use is for good or making you rich and famous. Well let's do the rich and famous first and after that safe the world:-)

Watching TV too close?

Have you tried to watch your TV screen at the distance of 25 cm? I think that TV screen is too big and the picture is not very good. I don't think that people will start watching their current televisions this close. I don't think that they will carry them arround either - even if tv's were wireless.

So why do we compere TV and Mobile? Why does it sound clever when some one says that screen on a mobile phone is too small and we don't want to watch moving images on it? New phones have the same amount of pixels. It has the same amount of information. We just look at it closer and often in a noisier environment. I think that mobile phone will be a very good tool for instructions, educational clips, music videos and so on.

Photo a day keeps the doctor a way

I am not an evening person. I can't write a log of days events in the evening. That's when I watch television.
I think that I will try to take one picture a day. Not that it will publish. It might...
Taking photos is good for your health. It gives an moment just for you and to consentrate on what is in front of you.

Learning bloggers way of life

For now I have written my diary first in the morning. It has been a kind of what do I want to do today session. I will continue that on my computer. Blogging might be an end of the day session?
What happened and what's on my mind in the end of the day?

I don't know if it matters to readers. Blogging is meant for reading and I would love feed back, but the process of just writing and expressing a tought publicly is important too. The possibility that some one reads this, makes me think more about what I am writing.

non-profit reporting

Steve Outing wrote about Non-profit reporting on Poynteronline

http://www.poynter.org/profile/profile.asp?user=1648

That is something that I was thinking when naming this blog as "DVreport".
DV is digital video so non-profit video reports and by mobilephones - yes.
But we need an ontology for selecting reports that we want to view or clips from reports.

Feeling lucky

Today is the 13th and a Friday, which here in Finland would be considered as an unlucky day. Murphy's day? I have been working all morning and think that I have got something done, too. I have send emails and answered them. I used to think that lot of emails was waisting my time. But now I feel that emailing is a modern way of talking. Sometimes I have serious discussions with long emails and often I just through a comment for a by passer.

Emails are one way off being in contact with people. I think it's waluable that someone takes time and writes a message to me. Tries to help me to understand something. (I don't like spamm. That's like shouting at you face or trying to sell you stuff at a street corner when your not interested in buying.

Making waves

Big step for me - to publish a bolg and to use a platform that I don't control.
What if blogger decides to put a prise tag on the blog?
Well, I will deal with that when it happens.

I think that it is important to let the steam out - publish and see where it will take me.
